Day 14: Cambridge – London

A fortnight in England and already we had seen and experienced so much. Time to pack the bags again and head for our final U.K. destination – London. An early departure had us heading off along the A1 in relatively light traffic towards Heathrow. The hire car (a Skoda Superb estate) had been very comfortable and reliable, and with the bonus of an excellent SatNav meant we were able to explore and reach destinations accurately and safely. We dropped off our hire car to the disinterested Hertz employees and boarded the courtesy shuttle to the main terminals. The next component of our London transit was the tube ride along the Picadilly line from Heathrow to Kings Cross.

Needless to say it wasn’t the most interesting part of our journey. After arriving at Kings Cross station we resisted the temptation to visit Platform 9 3/4 and instead headed to our apartment near Euston Station. The remainder of the afternoon was spent exploring the local area after a late lunch at All Bar One.

While the sensible members of the team settled in at the apartment as the sun set, Pete instead headed out for a run around the nearby Regents Park. This included a run through the interesting sculpture gardens, a run past the rather smelly and uninviting London Zoo and a daredevil dash through the aftermath of a Japanese wedding in the gardens.

Dinner was expertly prepared by Tessa using a poorly equipped kitchen but tasty ingredients from the local waitrose. Not to be outdone by Charlie’s Pizza of Cambridge she also managed to whip up a very tasty dessert calzone for the boys and some delightful cheese sticks for us to snack on the following day.
